In the present circumstances, no one can afford to assume that someone else will solve their problems. Every individual has a responsibility to help guide our global family in the right direction. Good wishes are not sufficient; we must become actively engaged.”- The Dalai Lama
This quote by the Dalai Lama effectively sums up the rationale for the Current Issues course we will be engaged in this year, namely that as citizens of the 21st century, we have a responsibility to not only be aware of the outside world, but also to actively become engaged in it. All too often in our history, we have looked at the outside world with fear and contempt, with words like "globalization" conjuring up images of outsourced American jobs, skyrocketing foreign debt, immigrants illegally entering the nation in droves, and our soldiers losing their lives fighting confused wars in even more confusing lands. While these issues are very real, we must remember that America is a country which prides itself as an international force of good, and is a nation that continues to extend her arms to those that need help, wherever they may be.
As we study Current Issues this year, we will look with open hearts and minds into issues facing millions, even billions of people around the world. From poverty, human rights, women's issues, to things like the environment, armed conflict, and health care, we will try to become more informed citizens, and maybe, make a difference in the world. Please join me in this process.
