Public action should seek to expand the set of opportunities of those who have the least voice and fewest resources and capabilities.-Paul Wolfowitz
It may be common sense that a government of the people, by the people, and for the people does not function well without continued input by...the people. However, it is not shocking to know that many citizens in America do not know how their government works, keep informed on crucial issues, or even exercise their civic responsibilities through voting. Why is this the case? Perhaps individuals are misinformed- easy to understand if one just focuses in on certain media news outlets that are about as trustworthy as the Jerry Springer Show. Or, some may be "too busy" to pay attention and vote- however, they never seem too busy to loudly complain about what the government is or isn't doing. Maybe they just don't care- but who in their right mind doesn't care about the direction their country is headed?
Well, lucky for us, this course will allow us to explore not only the roots of our government and how it functions, but also how we can become better, more informed citizens. We will learn to listen to our fellow colleagues and allow them the opportunity to express themselves, even if they may have an opinion that is different than ours. Most importantly, we will learn to ask questions, to maintain a healthy skepticism, and to make important decisions based on facts. Please join me in this process.
